CHAPMANVILLE Class AA No. 10 Chapmanville scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back beating county rival and Class A No. 3 Man, 11-1, in six innings Monday night at Ted Ellis Field.
Junior pitcher Jacob Topping walked three batters and hit one batter in the first three innings but settled down to retire the last nine batters he faced and delivered a two-run double in the sixth inning invoking the 10-run mercy rule.
Topping finished the evening with a double and two RBIs at the plate and earned the win on the mound for Chapmanville. Topping allowed one run on four hits, walked three, hit one and struck out eight in six innings.
Chapmanville got off to a fast start and never looked back as the Tigers plated four runs in the first inning chasing Man ace Bo Thompson from the game after just six batters.
Trey Butcher led off the first with a double and scored on Talan Thompson’s double for a 1-0 lead.
Evan Plumley delivered a two-run double to score Talan Thompson and Brody Dalton to extend Chapmanville’s lead to 3-0 and Plumley scored on Andrew Farley’s sacrifice fly to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead after one inning.
Bo Thompson retired just one batter and allowed four runs on four hits with one strikeout and one intentional walk in just 1/3 innings. For Thompson, it was his first loss of the season. The junior pitcher had entered the contest with a 6-0 record.
Man got on the board in the third inning when Caleb Vance scored on an error to cut Chapmanville’s lead to 4-1 after three innings.
The Hillbillies would get no closer as the Tigers plated three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
In the Tigers fourth, Tyson Thompson, Plumley and Kirkendall had RBI singles to extend their advantage to 7-1 after four innings.
Dalton added an RBI single, and Tyson Thompson had a sacrifice fly in the fifth as Chapmanville led 9-1 after five innings.
Chapmanville registered 11 hits in the contest led by Kirkendall, who was 3-for-4 with a triple, one RBI and a run scored. Dalton was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored, while Plumley finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Talan Thompson had a double, one RBI and scored three runs; Topping had a double and two RBIs while Farley, Eli Surgoine and Talan Thompson each had one hit and one RBI and Butcher added a double for the Tigers.
Man used three pitchers in the loss. Caleb Blevins relieved Bo Thompson and allowed four unearned runs on four hits while striking out two and two walks in 3 2/3 innings. Brayden Compton allowed three runs on three hits with one strikeout and two walks in one inning of work.
Blevins had a double while Jace Adkins, Preston Blankenship and Drake Veres each had a single and Brady Hall-Montgomery drove in one run for Man.
