Dean's 26 carries Tigers to road win at Winfield

WINFIELD Sal Dean had 26 points including four 3-pointers and Class AA No. 3 Chapmanville defeated AAA No. 6 Winfield 61-50 Thursday night at Winfield High School.


Winfield, who has lost four of its last five games, led 9-7 in the first quarter before Chapmanville closed the quarter on an 11-2 run to take an 18-11 lead after one quarter.


The Tigers never trailed after that point and were never really threatened as they pushed the advantage to 11 points, 29-18, at halftime.


Winfield managed to get within six points, 39-33, in the third quarter, but the Tigers closed the third on a 7-0 run and led 46-33 after three quarters.


Dean scored nine points in the opening quarter and had seven each in the third and fourth quarters. Brody Dalton scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half while Zion Belvins added 10 points for the Tigers.


Cody Griffith knocked down five 3-pointers and led Winfield with 22 points.


The Generals fell to 7-7 overall and 5-3 in the Cardinal Conference while Chapmanville remained unbeaten against West Virginia schools this season to improve 13-1 overall and 6-0 in the Cardinal Conference.
