Hatfield Runs for Three Touchdowns, Throws for One More in Huskies 42-33 Win Over Tigers

CHAPMANVILLE Herbert Hoover quarterback Dane Hatfield ran for three touchdowns and passed for a fourth as the Class AA No. 17 Huskies defeated No. 14 Chapmanville 42-33 in a matchup of ranked teams Friday night at Barker Stadium.


Hatfield scored on runs of 30, 31 and 55 yards while Randy Hughart scored on runs of 7 and 19 yards. Levi Paxton caught a 39-yard touchdown and kicked six extra points for Herbert Hoover.


Hatfield ran for 171 yards on 19 carries and completed 6 of 10 passes for 60 yards. Hughart ran for 63 yards on nine carries and Rocco Frye ran for 55 yards on 10 carries for the Huskies who ran for 287 yards.


After forcing a Chapmanville turnover on the very first play, Hatfield and the Huskies needed just four plays to reach the endzone as Hatfield ran in from 30-yards out to put the Huskies up 7-0 after Paxton’s extra point with 8:51 to play in the opening quarter.


The homestanding Tigers answered the Husky score with a score of their own to tie the game, 7-7, with 5:19 to play in the first on quarterback Brody Dalton’s 6-yard run and Jacob Ferrell’s extra point.


Hatfield’s second touchdown, a 31-yard run, gave Herbert Hoover a 14-7 lead with 4:05 to play in the opening quarter.


Chapmanville answered as they got an 8-yard pass from Dalton to Adam Mullins to tie the game once more at 14 with 10:41 to play before halftime.


Hoover answered with a 39-yard pass from Hatfield to Paxton for a 21-14 lead with 9:09 remaining before Kohl Farmer outraced the Husky defense for a 67-yard touchdown to even the score at 21 with 8:47 remaining in the first half.


Hughart ran for a 7-yard touchdown with 4:18 to play in the first half to give Herbert Hoover a 28-21 lead before Chapmanville responded with a scoring drive of its own to draw within one.


Dalton outraced the Husky defense for a 19-yard touchdown with 2:16 remaining. Ferrell’s extra point was blocked, and the Tigers trailed 28-27.


The play was a costly one for Chapmanville as Farmer, the Cardinal Conference’s leading rusher, injured his shoulder on the play and set out the remainder of the game. Farmer rushed for 106 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown in the first half.


On the very first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Hatfield took a snap ran to his left, cut back to his right weaving in and out of traffic and breaking a number of tackles on his way to a 55-yard touchdown to give Herbert Hoover a 35-27 lead with 11:31 to play.


Herbert Hoover intercepted Dalton on Chapmanville’s second play of its first possession of the third quarter as the Huskies took over at the Tigers 44.


On the drive, Rocco Frye gained 11 yards on 3rd-and-6 and Dylan Schafer made a sliding catch for an 8-yard gain on 4th-and-8 to keep the drive alive. On the very next play following Schafer’s sliding grab, Hughart outraced the Chapmanville defense for a 19-yard touchdown and a 42-27 lead with 5:50 to play in the quarter.


Dalton hooked up with Mullins for a second touchdown, this one from 15-yards out to cut the deficit to 42-33 with 0:50 remaining after a failed two-point conversion attempt.

Dalton completed 22 of 38 passes for 256 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Dalton ran for 70 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns while Mullins hauled in 12 receptions for 180 yards and two scores.


Chapmanville outgained Herbert Hoover, 441-347 in total offense, but turned the ball over three times in the loss.


Herbert Hoover improved to 3-2 overall and 3-2 in the Cardinal Conference. The Huskies dropped their first two games to open season losing to Class AA No. 2 Scott and No. 6 Winfield but have won three consecutive games.


Chapmanville, who has lost two straight games, falls to 3-3 overall and 3-3 in the Cardinal Conference.


Herbert Hoover will host Wayne Friday night while Chapmanville will return to action in two weeks traveling to Wayne on October 14.
