Hess, Brunty, Watts lead Cabell Midland over Lady Wildcats 6-5 in 10 innings

LOGAN   Kalissa Hess had the defensive play of the game in the eighth inning, Emma Brunty drove home the game-winning run with a two out run-scoring double in the top of the 10th and Class AAAA No. 2 Cabell Midland beat the Class AA No. 1 Logan Lady Wildcats 6-5 Monday evening at Bea Orr Field.

 

With the game tied 5-5, Emilee Mullins led off the bottom of the eighth with a shot to the right center field gap. Right fielder Hess made a sliding stop on her knees and quickly got to her feet to hold Mullins to a single.

 

Two batters later, Addison Starr hit a line drive that was slicing away from Hess, who lunged to her left, snagging the line drive for the second out and fired the ball back to first base to double up courtesy runner Charli Albright for the third out and send the game to the ninth inning.

 

Brunty hit a go-ahead double in the 10th off starting pitcher Myleigh Adkins to score Madison McCallister from first base.

 

Brunty, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in left field during a pitching change in the fifth inning, was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

 

Watts pitched six innings of relief for Cabell Midland (17-3) striking out 11 and allowing three hits to earn the win.

 

Adkins suffered the loss for Logan (17-5) after tossing 10 innings and giving up six runs on 14 hits with 12 strikeouts and three walks.

 

Baylee Smith hit a two-run homer over the left center field fence in the first inning to give the Lady Knights a 2-0 lead. Karlee Salmons scored on a throwing error in the second to make it 3-0.

 

Logan got two runs in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 3-2. Lena Setser had a run-scoring double and Starr drove in a run when she reached on a fielding error.

 

Ashlin Brumfield tied the game at 3-3 with her run-scoring single in the fifth and Mullins had a two-run single to give Logan a 5-3 lead after five innings.

 

Brunty’s sacrifice bunt in the sixth brought Cabell Midland to within one, 5-4, and Hess followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 5-5 in the sixth.

 

Madison McCallister was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Becca Conrad and Hayla Norris each had two hits for the Lady Knights.

 

Mullins went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Setser was 2-for-4 with one RBI for Logan.
