DANVILLE Top seeded Scott plated four runs in the fifth inning to clinch a spot in the Class AA Region 4 championship.

The Lady Skyhawks staved off elimination for the third time in the Class AA Region 4 Section 2 tournament, beating second-seeded Chapmanville, 6-3, Wednesday night at Lick Creek Park.

Scott’s second consecutive sectional championship was hard-earned. The Lady Skyhawks defeated Wayne in their opening game of the sectional tournament but dropped a 12-inning heartbreaker to Chapmanville in the winner’s bracket championship.

The Lady Skyhawks dropped to the loser’s bracket and had to rally from four runs down to defeat Logan on a walkoff Monday evening and defeated Chapmanville in five innings on Tuesday to set up a winner-take-all final.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Tatum Halley doubled to left to plate two runs that gave Scott a lead they would never relinquish. The Lady Skyhawks tacked on two more runs getting a run-scoring double from Natalie Green and a sacrifice fly from Abigail Cook.

Tatum, Scott’s starting pitcher, tossed a complete game to pick up the win in the circle. She allowed three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Chapmanville had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout from Brooke Christian and a run-scoring single from Ashleigh Mahon.

Scott jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning. Green drove home Halley with a run-scoring single and scored on Hannah Price’s RBI double.

Chapmanville cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning. Chloe Murphy’s run-scoring single scored Baylee Belcher to cut the Scott lead to 2-1.

Murphy took the loss in the circle for Chapmanville after allowing six runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits in six innings. She struck out six and walked one and was 1-for-3 with one RBI at the plate.

Christian and Mahon were both 1-for-4 and each drove in a run. Erin Adkins, Baylee Belcher, Sydney Belcher and Claire Dingess each had one hit for the Lady Tigers (16-11).

Green went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for the Lady Skyhawks. Price was 1-for-2 with a double and one RBI and Cook went with one RBI.

Hailey Capps was 1-for-3 with a double while Jayden Elkins and Kayleigh Ellis each had a single for Scott.

The Lady Skyhawks (21-9) advance to next week’s Class AA Region 4 championship and will face either Nitro or Winfield.
