CHAPMANVILLE   Timely hitting from Mady Farley and domination in the circle by Chloe Murphy has Chapmanville one win away from advancing to its first state tournament in seven years.

Farley drove in the game's only two runs with a fourth inning double and Murphy tossed a one-hitter striking out 16 as the seventh ranked Lady Tigers knocked off No. 1 and two-time Class AA champion Winfield 2-0 in the first game of the Class AAA Region 4 championship at Ronnie "Mule" Ooten Field.

With the win, Chapmanville improved to 18-6 and 2-1 against Winfield this season, but the win moved the Lady Tigers one victory away from a berth in next week's Class AAA state softball tournament at South Charleston's Little Creek Park.

Murphy allowed a leadoff double to Winfield's Evie Loyd before retiring the next 19 batters in order before Rylee McClellan reached on an error with one out in the seventh.

Murphy struck out 11 consecutive Lady Generals (24-7) starting with a strikeout of Mattie Carroll to end the first inning.

Scoreless through three innings, Evy Altizer started the bottom of the fourth inning for the Lady Tigers by reaching base safely on an error, Peyton Lusk followed and was hit by the pitch and two batters later, Farley lined a double to center field with two outs to give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Carroll allowed two unearned runs on five hits with three strikeouts, two hit batters and one walk in six innings for Winfield.

Evy Altizer had a double and Brooke Christian, Hannah Miller and Murphy each had one hit for Chapmanville.

Game two of the best of three Region 4 championship series is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday evening at Winfield High School. The Lady Generals must win to force a winner-take-all championship game Wednesday evening at Chapmanville.
