Logan’s Browning Hits 7 3’s In Road Win Over Mingo Central

NEWTOWN, WVa Scotty Browning scored 27 points and Garrett Williamson and Jackson Tackett recorded double-doubles for Class AAA number two Logan who built a 20-point second half advantage and held off Mingo Central 66-52 Monday night on Miner Mountain.

Browning was 10 of 18 from the field and 7 for 13 from 3-point range while Williamson was two rebounds shy of a triple-double finishing with 16 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds. Tackett added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Logan while Jaxon Cogar contributed 11 points.

Jarius Jackson had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the Miners, who have lost nine of 14 games after a 6-2 start to the season. Ethan Thomason had 13 points off the bench and Justin May 10 points.

Logan shot 49% and was 8 of 20 from 3. Mingo Central 42.9% and was 6 of 17 from behind the arc.

Up by 10 at halftime, Logan increased its lead to 20 after a pair of Browning 3’s and six points from Williamson fueled a 12-2 run to start the third quarter.

Mingo Central responded with a 12-3 run to get back within 11 in the fourth quarter but the Miners could get no closer.

Mingo Central jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first quarter before Logan responded with a 12-4 run to end the first quarter with a 14-11 lead.

An 11-2 run to start the second quarter with five points from Browning expanded the lead to 12, 25-13, before Mingo Central answered with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to seven, 27-20, with 3:03 on a May basket. Logan scored five of the next seven points and led 32-22 at the break.

The Wildcats were 12 of 21 from the floor and was 4 of 10 from 3-point range in the first half while Mingo Central was 10 of 23 and 2 of 7 from behind the arc.

Logan won the first meeting, 76-66, on Jan. 29 at Willie Akers Arena and has beaten Mingo Central nine straight times dating back to the 2018 Class AA Region 4 Section 2 tournament at Chapmanville Regional High School.

Mingo Central’s last win in the series was on Jan. 23, 2018, when the Miners defeated the Wildcats 63-47 atop Miner Mountain.

Mingo Central falls to 9-11 and will host Tolsia on Tuesday and close out the regular season Friday at Lincoln County before starting tournament play next weekend.

Logan improved to 19-2 with the win and will look to win its 20th game for the first time since the 2018-19 season when they close out the regular season at Lincoln County Saturday afternoon.
