McDowell County Schools Denied Money From SBA

The School Building Authority did not approve funding for McDowell County’s proposed projects Monday.

Plans were to close and consolidate Fall River, Kimball and Welch elementary schools into a new school to be built on 350 acres of property adjacent to Mount View High School.

The new school was projected to have about 542 students. The county aimed to convert the Fall River Elementary building into its career technical center.

SBA board member Debra Sullivan said leaving that project out was an especially difficult decision.

The counties whose projects were not selected Monday can reapply in December and also try to secure CARES Act funding.
