MAN Independence senior running back rushed for 173 yards and six touchdowns to lead Class AA No. 3 Independence to 52-0 win over Class A No. 8 Man last Friday at George A. Queen Memorial Field.
Price carried the ball 23 times and caught a pass for 12 yards while rushing for touchdowns of 5, 29, 6, 8, 1 and 3 yards. It is the second time this season that Price has rushed for six touchdowns, rushing for six in a 68-0 victory at Shady Spring on Sept. 16.
Price added three two-point conversions and increased his season point total to 226 points. He needs just 51 points in his remaining two regular season games to break Ethan Payne’s record of 276 points. Payne set the record during the 2019 season for the Poca Dots.
Price has rushed for 29 touchdowns this season, caught one pass for a touchdown and has 27 two-point conversions.
He opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown and tacked on the two-point conversion to give Independence an 8-0 lead with 8:47 to play in the opening quarter.
Independence added to its lead when Jordan Harvey blocked a Jaxon Tipton punt and Colten Caron tackled Corey Morgan in the endzone for a safety to give the Patriots a 10-0 lead with 2:47 remaining.
Nineteen seconds later, Quarterback Trey Bowers scored on a 45-yard run to give Independence a 16-0 lead with 2:28 to play in the first quarter.
Price’s 29-yard run gave Independence a 22-0 lead with 5:33 to play in the second quarter and his 6-yard run and two-point conversion increased the Patriots lead to 30-0 with 1:35 to play in the first half.
Price continued his scoring onslaught in the third quarter with touchdown runs of 8 and 1 yards to give the Patriots a 44-0 lead after three quarters.
His sixth and final touchdown, a 3-yard run with 3:38 to play in the fourth quarter, increased the lead to 52-0.
Bowers ran for 75 yards on 10 carries and one touchdown while completing 6 of 9 passes for 152 yards. Cyrus Goodson hauled in four receptions for 127 yards for the Patriots who had 399 yards of total offense.
Jordan Adams rushed for 30 yards on 13 carries for the Hillbillies while Jayden Brumfield completed 6 of 12 passes for 22 yards.
The Patriots defense recorded 14 tackles for loss, three quarterback sacks and blocked one punt while limiting the Hillbillies to just six yards of total offense and four first downs.
The win clinched a playoff spot for the Patriots as they improved to 7-0 on the season while snapping Man’s six-game winning streak to drop the Hillbillies to 6-2 on the year.
Independence will host Class AA No. 7 Nicholas County Friday night at George D. Covey Field.
Man returns to action in two weeks traveling to Class A No. 15 Tug Valley. A win by Man would clinch the Hillbillies first playoff berth in three years.
