Southern Conducts 2021 Commencement


Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College conducted its 2021 Commencement ceremony on May 15th.


The ceremony took place at the Savas-Kostas Performing Arts Center on the Logan campus on a fully decorated stage with President Dr. Pamela Alderman, staff, and employees.

“During these uncertain days, we appreciate the patience and understanding of the students, their parents, families, and friends. We hope that we can all be together next year for this celebration,” Dr. Alderman said. “I am extremely proud of all our graduates and their accomplishments at our institution.”


Guest speakers included Governor Jim Justice and Senators Joe Manchin and Shelly Moore Capito.


"Congratulations on a big, big day," Governor Justice said. "You're the engine now that makes everything turn."

Smaller ceremonies were conducted on the Logan campus. The Nursing program awards ceremony was held Tuesday, May 11thh at 4:15 pm with students and faculty in attendance. The Radiology Technology pinning ceremony was May 12th at 6 pm. The Medical Laboratory Technology pinning was held Thursday, May 13th at 6 pm. The Surgical Technology pinning ceremony was held Friday, May 14th at 2 pm. Several nurse pinning ceremonies were held Saturday, May 15th starting at noon. The nursing pinning ceremonies had to be separated to meet social distancing requirements.

The National Society of Leadership and Success held its virtual induction on Friday, April 23, 2021, at 6 pm. Southern’s TANF program held its virtual banquet celebration on Thursday, May 6, 2021, at 6 pm. Students were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society on Friday, May 14, 2021, at 6 pm.

The local college will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next school year. Various events are planned on all its campuses, located in Logan, Williamson, Boone, Lincoln, and Wyoming.
