CHAPMANVILLE   In a battle of two of the top eight schools in Class AAA, eighth-ranked Chapmanville set the tone early jumping out to an early double-digit lead en route to a 70-54 win over third-ranked Nitro.

Chapmanville improved to 9-5 and kept its hopes alive for a bye in the Class AAA Region IV tournament. Chapmanville, who lost to Winfield last week, avoided a second straight regional loss and joined Nitro and Wayne as the other schools with one loss against regional competition.

In terms of postseason seeding, the win was important to the Tigers given the fact that all Region IV schools do not face one another this season.

Chapmanville trailed just once, 2-0, when Ashton Crouch scored the first basket of the game for Nitro. A Joey Gollihue basket, bucket from Keaton Terry and Benji Adkins and four straight points from Jay Brock gave the Tigers a 10-2 lead.

Nitro closed to 10-5 on a Ty Stephens 3-pointer, but the Tigers would hold a 20-12 lead after one quarter.

Chapmanville's lead would reach 12 points in the second quarter before Nitro closed the half on an 8-3 run to trim the Tigers lead to 33-26 at halftime.

Back-to-back baskets from Collin Crouch brought Nitro to within one, 36-35, in the third quarter before Chapmanville answered with a 12-2 run to close the quarter and take a 48-37 lead after three quarters.

The Wildcats would get as close as nine points, 50-41, when Ashton Crouch scored in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers responded with an 18-8 run to take its largest lead, 68-49, on Joey Gollihue's basket.

Gollihue was of three Tigers in double figures, finishing with 22 points. Terry scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half and Brock finished with 15 points.

Ashton Crouch led Nitro (10-4) with 16 points, Collin Crouch had nine and Derek Lowe seven for the Wildcats.

Chapmanville and Nitro will be back in action Monday taking part in the Snyder of Berlin Utz Snacks Shootout at West Virginia State's Walker Convocation Center. The Tigers will face Bluefield at 5:30 p.m. while Nitro takes on Class AA No. 6 Charleston Catholic at 8:30 p.m.
