CHAPMANVILLE Heavy police response at Chapmanville Regional High School Friday following misinformation reported of an active threat.
According to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, a social media post was again the cause for worry when a student at Chapmanville Regional High School shared a post “with an adult outside of the building that did not pertain to Chapmanville area schools.”
The message was re-posted by another student in the building. According to the sheriff’s office, when the adult was unable to contact the student to get clarity about the origins of the message she called Logan 911
The information was again the result of “swatting” posts online. Swatting online has resulted in multiple school districts going into lock-down, early dismissals or both this week.
According Logan County Sheriff PD Clemens at least one sixteen year old student was detained earlier today but no charges filed. It was only after both students involved were removed it was revealed the shared post did not involve any Logan County School.
A statement from the sheriff’s office said at no time were any students in danger and no weapons were located.
Chapmanville area schools were dismissed early due to the incident.
Logan County Schools were made aware of a social media post regarding many select schools being targeted for violence on Friday.
Most of the alleged threats are being transmitted on the social media platform SnapChat. The posts are reoccurring pictures from other areas with hashtags and school names changed before being transmitted once again to local areas.
The sheriff’s department says if a student receives one of these messages to immediately take to the School Resource Officer. Students should not share the image. Any adults that receive similar messages should contact 911 immediately. Adults are also asked not to share to messages in question. According to Logan County Sheriff’s deputies, reporting the message and not sharing it will ensure a quicker response and better abilities vetting the accuracy of the information to the other law enforcement agencies throughout the state.
