WELCH Man improved to 2-0 on the season with a dominating defensive performance in a 46-0 victory over the Mount View Golden Knights at Vic Nystrom Stadium last Friday night.
Led by Jairadan Hairston’s four sacks and Houston Ellis’s 2 ½ sacks, the Hillbillies sacked three different Mount View quarterbacks nine times. Four other players have at least a share of a sack and the Hillbillies registered 15 tackles for loss holding the Golden Knights to 88 total yards.
The defensive effort, which included four turnovers including an interception and fumble returned for touchdowns, helped Man overcome 14 penalties and a slow first quarter start.
The Hillbillies were penalized for 145 yards, including four penalties that nullified touchdowns by Man in the first and fourth quarters.
Man had touchdowns called back on two separate occasions on its first drive and two more called back on its final drive in the fourth quarter.
Josh Spriggs got the scoring started for the Hillbillies with a 43-yard interception return to put Man on top 6-0 with 49 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Devon Sanders tossed two touchdown passes in the second quarter to put Man ahead 18-0 at halftime.
Sanders first touchdown pass, a 19 yarder to Lukas Haney with 7:47 remaining before halftime gave Man a 12-0 lead. With 1:11 to play before halftime, Sanders hooked up with Trey Ward for a 30-yard scoring strike.
The Hillbillies exploded for 28 points in the third quarter as four different players found pay dirt starting with Kaleb Mullins’ 1-yard plunge with 11:02 remaining. Sanders found Haney in the back of the endzone for the two-point conversion giving Man a 26-0 lead.
Jayden Brumfield ran in from 55 yards out for a 32-0 lead with 8:30 remaining and Dusten Baisden returned a fumble 70-yards as Man took a 39-0 lead following Colton Justice’s extra point with 6:18 remaining.
Sanders finished the scoring for the Hillbillies, rushing for a 12-yard touchdown with 2:18 to play in the quarter as Justice added his second extra point for a 46-0 lead.
Brumfield had 91 yards rushing on six carries, Corey Morgan rushed for 68 yards on five attempts and Sanders carried the ball three times for 59 yards and completed 2 of 4 passes for 49 yards.
Spriggs ran for 48 yards on five carries and Mullins added 46 yards on five rushing attempts.
Hunter Muncy completed 3 of 5 passes for 30 yards and Zy’Mir Martin ran for 41 yards on five attempts. Martin also had one reception for 21 yards while Jaron Hale carried the ball 12 times finishing with 29 yards.
Man is back in action this evening at Westside while Mount View travels to Braxton County.
