LOGAN   After leading for the entire first half, Class AA No. 6 Logan had to rally from an eight-point third quarter deficit to defeat county rival and Class AAA No. 5 Chapmanville 65-55 in the King Coal Classic Saturday night at the Willie Akers Arena.

Lucas Lambert had a career-high 29 points and Zayden Sherrod added 13 for Logan, who improved to 5-0 on the season.

Lambert and Sherrod combined for 18 points in the fourth quarter as Logan outscored Chapmanville 23-10. Lambert made six 3-pointers and Sherrod had a two-handed slam in the fourth quarter erasing an eight-point third quarter deficit.

Trailing 37-29, after a Joey Gollihue 3-pointer with 5:24 to play in the third quarter, but Logan was able to even the score by getting to the free-throw line and outscore Chapmanville 9-1 over the next 3:04.

The Tigers responded with a 6-0 run to take a 45-39 lead with 0:34 remaining on Keaton Terry's basket, but Logan knocked down three free throws to pull within three, 45-42, after three quarters.

Sherrod's slam and Lambert's basket to start the fourth quarter gave Logan a 48-45 lead before Jay Capers' 3-pointer tied the score at 48 with 6:44 remaining.

Ivan Miller broke the tie, giving Logan a 50-48 lead that the Wildcats wouldn't relinquish and a Matt Hatfield 3 with 5:46 remaining gave the Wildcats a five-point advantage, 53-48.

Logan appeared to be in control, but with 5:36 remaining, McCormick Ilderton, Sherrod and Chapmanville's Benji Adkins drove for a loose ball resulting in a tie up. Tempers flared and members of the Logan bench emptied onto the floor resulting in a technical foul sending Gollihue to the free throw line.

Gollihue made one of two free throws and 0:39 latter drained a 3 from near the top of the key to bring Chapmanville to within one, 53-52.

On his way up the court, Gollihue was whistled for a taunting technical with 4:45 to play. Lambert knocked down both free throws giving the Wildcats a three-point advantage, 55-52.

Adkins scored on a layup to bring Chapmanville back within one point, 55-54, with 4:09 to play, but the Tigers would get no closer as they missed their final seven shots and were outscored 10-1 in the final four minutes.

Lambert hit his sixth and final 3 with 2:17 remaining gave Logan a six-point advantage and ending any hopes of a Chapmanville rally.

Gollihue led Chapmanville with 12 points, Adkins and Capers each had 11 and Terry finished with 10 points.

Logan jumped out to a 15-4 first quarter lead and led by six, 17-11, after one quarter, but Chapmanville pulled to within two, 26-24, at halftime and had the upper hand in the third quarter.

Terry's basket with 6:10 remaining in the third quarter gave the Tigers their first lead of the contest, 30-28.

Chapmanville (3-1) returns to action Thursday afternoon in the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic in Daytona, Florida. The Tigers will face Logan County (Kentucky) at 3 p.m. at Warner Christian Academy.

Logan returns to the hardwood on January 3 at rival Scott.
