MAN Trey Ward returned the opening kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown, Dusten Baisden ran for three touchdowns and the Man Hillbillies shut out the Mount View Golden Knights 35-0 Friday night at William Tootie Carter Field at George A. Queen Memorial Stadium.
In addition to his kick return, Ward, a first team Class A All State selection last season, added a 55-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the Hillbillies, who improved to 2-0 on the season.
Baisden rushed for 67 yards on eight carries and scored on runs of 5, 27 and 4 for the Hillbillies.
Before the game, Man dedicated the field in memory of former head coach William “Tootie” Carter, who passed away at the age of 82 in January. Carter coached for 30 seasons at Man High School, winning 200 games, leading the Hillbillies to three Class AA runner-up finishes (1977, 1980 and 1984) and 12 playoff appearances.
Mount View piled up 130 yards in the first quarter, but the Man defense buckled down and held the Golden Knights to only two yards in the final three quarters.
Jaron Hale rushed for 83 yards on 22 attempts and Hunter Muncy completed 4 of 12 passes for 73 yards.
Man led 14-0 after Baisden’s 5-yard run with 4:41 remaining in the second quarter.
A pair of third quarter touchdowns from Baisden increased Man’s advantage to 28-0. The Hillbillies racked up 273 yards of total offense, running for 179 and throwing for 94.
Devon Sanders completed 7 of 12 passes for 94 yards and Jake Endicott caught four passes for 64 yards.
Mount View (0-2) will host Tolsia Friday night while Man entertains Westside in a battle of 2-0 teams.
