LOGAN The City of Logan has been named a 2025 All Star Community by the West Virginia Municipal League for its role in launching the nation’s first separately accredited rural general surgery residency program with Marshall University.

The residency is based at Logan Regional Medical Center through the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall. It welcomed its first three residents in July.

The program is notable for being the first surgical residency in the country with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s rural track designation.

Residents will complete at least half of their five-year training at Logan Regional, where they’ll be working with advanced technology such as a Lap-A-R simulator and a DaVinci Surgical System.

City of Logan Fire Chief and Code Enforcement Officer Scott Beckett has been one of the main players in promoting and seeking funding for the program. He says the program is designed to prepare surgeons for general practice in rural communities and expects it to help address a shortage of specialists in southern West Virginia.

The All Star Community Award is presented annually to cities across the state that demonstrate innovation and excellence in local government projects.
